How Do You Get Rid of Bed Bugs for Good

My Findings after Spending $5,000+ and testing 17 approaches

bed-bug
bed-bug

I've got a story to share, and it's not a pretty one.

It all started when I got this great deal on a second-hand couch. Little did I know though, that couch was a Trojan horse for bed bugs down the road.

For the first few weeks I didn’t notice a thing. Perhaps a small itch here or there but I dismissed it since I thought it was a mosquito bite.

bed-bug bed-bug

Then one day I noticed two very unfamiliar bugs in my bedroom. After confirming that they were bed bugs I totally freaked out.

I’ve heard so many horror stories about this pest and I didn’t want my life to become one of those as well.

bed-bug

So I decided to pay a professional to get rid of bed bugs. They came in, did some stuff and after signing off a big check I hoped that was the end of it…

…oh boy, was I wrong…

The bites dropped for a few days, but they soon returned.

I didn’t want to pay another hefty sum to someone who couldn’t solve my problem so I decided to take matters into my own hands.

I investigated the possibilities and tried it all – from traditional remedies to the latest high-tech solutions. From over-the-counter sprays to various home solutions. You name it, I’ve done it.

I threw everything I could find at these pests.

bed-bug bed-bug

And they just kept coming back.

Until one day I finally found a bed bug treatment that ultimately got rid of them once and for all. When I look back now I know I could save a lot if I would start with it … but I guess we all have to learn from our mistakes.

Living with them was a nightmare, to say the least. Every night felt like a horror movie – itching, scratching, and sleepless hours. The anxiety of knowing these tiny creatures were lurking around made it impossible to relax.

bed-bug

It felt like my home had been invaded, and I couldn't find peace anywhere. And I couldn’t even tell anyone about it without being socially ostracized.

Financially, the battle was brutal. I spent over $5,000 on various bed bug treatments, and every dollar felt like it was being tossed into a black hole.

But here's the silver lining: I’ve learned a ton from this ordeal. And even though I can’t get that money or time back, at least I can share my findings in the hopes that they will help someone.

Looking back this is exactly what I would need to avoid the ordeal I went through.

I hope my notes and experiences help you get rid of bed bugs far faster and with less hassle I went through.

Stay safe

9.9
"Perfect Solution"
Price: starts at $19.99 $36.95

Say Bye Bugs turned out to be just what I was looking for getting rid of bed bugs. Effective, safe and hassle free solution that ultimately got my problem solved

PROS
Kills on contact.
Kills all stages of bed bugs.
University developed.
Laboratory and field tested.
Non-toxic when used as directed.
Ideal for homes with children and pets.
Odorless.
Leaves no stains.
Simple to use – Shake & Spray.
No cleanup required.
Hypoallergenic.
Biodegradable.
Made in the USA.
CONS
No residual effect.
Require following the label instructions.

As part of my ongoing battle against bed bugs, I tried Say Bye Bugs, a non-toxic pesticide spray. Initially, I was a bit reluctant because non-toxic solutions are often less effective compared to the synthetic ones. But with my family’s safety in mind, I decided to give it a shot.

It killed on contact which was more than sufficient for me. A huge plus for me was that it’s odorless and doesn’t leave any stains, meaning there’s no cleanup required. Everything else required some additional steps to make the method work. But not Say Bye Bugs. You shake and spray, and in a few minutes you can go on with your life.

With all these environmental problems going on I really liked that it also has minimal impact on the environment and is biodegradable.

Plus, it’s made in the USA, which is always an added bonus in my book.

Toxic Pesticides
Pyrethrins and Pyrethroids
product
RATING
9.3
"Kills Everything"
Price: starting at $19.95

While the chemical had its benefits, the high toxicity left me looking for a safer solution.

PROS
Highly effective.
Inexpensive.
Widely available.
Easy to apply.
Can provide long-term protection when applied correctly.
CONS
Highly toxic.
You need to wear personal protective equipment.
May require repeated applications.
Bed bugs can develop resistance to certain chemicals over time.
Require following the label instructions.

As part of my ongoing battle against bed bugs, the next product I tried was a pesticide spray based on Pyrethrins and Pyrethroids. I was really hopeful about this one because I heard it was highly effective and cheap solution. Plus, it’s widely available and easy to apply, which was a big convenience.

On the positive side, the spray did work quite well initially. It knocked down the bed bugs quickly, and I appreciated that it didn't have an overpowering odor. When applied correctly, it seemed like it could offer long-term protection.

However, I wasn't satisfied. The major downside was the toxicity. With kids and pets at home, and spraying in our sleeping areas I was constantly worried about the potential health risks. Despite following the label instructions carefully, I had to reapply the spray a few times. This was not only a hassle but also raised concerns about overexposure to the chemicals. Another issue was that bed bugs can develop resistance to certain chemicals over time, which made me doubt the long-term effectiveness of the spray anyhow.

Foggers or Bug Bombs
product
RATING
8.5
"Simple and Quick Fix"
Price: starting at $26.48

Despite its ease of use and affordability, its questionable effectiveness and safety risks soon left me looking for a better solution.

PROS
Simple to use.
Low cost.
Available anywhere.
Can quickly cover a broad area of a large room or several rooms at once.
CONS
Questionable efficiency.
Risk of Fire or explosion due to flammability.
Can force bed bugs to run away and disperse to other areas.
Ineffective in cracks, crevices, and other hard-to-reach areas.
Requires vacating the premises during its effect.
Health risk if not used correctly.

I decided to try a fogger, also known as a bug bomb as well. I was hopeful it would help me tackle the infestation more effectively since it worked completely differently as anything else.

On the positive side, the fogger was incredibly simple to use. All I had to do was press a button and let it do its job. It's also low-cost and available pretty much anywhere, which made it a convenient option.

However, my experience didn’t deliver as expected. I found the efficiency of the fogger to be questionable. It seemed to have little impact on the bed bugs hiding in cracks, crevices, and other hard-to-reach areas. Instead of eliminating the bugs, it appeared to force them to disperse and run away to other areas of my home, which caused the bugs appearing all over the home and not just the bedroom.

Even though I had to leave the rooms there was always some concern for a potential explosion or fire. This stuff also goes airborne so who knows how long you or your family members then inhale it and what kind of implications this has down the road.

Overall, while the fogger was easy to use and affordable, its questionable efficiency and associated risks left me searching for a better solution.

Essential Oils
Neem, lavender, tea tree, peppermint, geraniol, cedarwood, clove, cottonseed oil.
product
RATING
8.2
"Intense"
Price: starting at $26.99

Essential oils were a mixed bag: non-toxic and safe but didn't work as hoped for, smelled strong, stained fabrics, and took too long to be effective.

PROS
Non-toxic.
Residual effect.
Biodegradable.
CONS
Variable effectiveness.
Leave strong odor.
Causes stains and discolorations on many surfaces.
Requires cleanup after the treatment.
May trigger allergic reactions
Slow to kill bed bug population, since it requires bed bugs to walk into the treated area.
Incorrect application or dilution may reduce effectiveness.
May be toxic to pets.

I decided to give essential oils a shot as well. I’d heard they killed bed bugs and some positive things about them being non-toxic, so I was really hoping they'd be a safer option compared to chemical treatments.

First off, the good stuff: essential oils are non-toxic and biodegradable, which made me feel a lot better about using them around my kids and pets. Plus, they have a residual effect, meaning they keep working over time. Applying them was simple, and it was nice knowing I wasn't exposing my family to any nasty chemicals.

But honestly, I wasn’t completely thrilled with how they worked. They helped, but they weren’t as powerful as I hoped. Reapplications were still required. And the strong smell … well, that was a separate topic altogether. It lingered and was pretty overwhelming. And let’s not even talk about the stains – each time I had to scrub and rinse my entire home for hours. Even now I still have some stains that I just can’t get rid of.

I also found out that some oils could potentially trigger allergic reactions and be toxic to pets, so I had to be extra cautious.

In the end, while essential oils are a nice non-toxic and biodegradable option, their inconsistent effectiveness, strong smell, stains and workload surrounding cleanups left me searching for a better bed bug solution.

Home remedies
Alcohol, kerosene, gasoline.
product
RATING
8.1
"Potent and dangerous"
Price: starting at $24.25

Despite being inexpensive and readily available they proved ineffective, hazardous, and impractical.

PROS
High availability.
Inexpensive.
CONS
Variable effectiveness.
May also cause irritation or allergic reactions in some people and pets.
Could harm you and your family.
Can easily ignite and cause fire or explosion (a spark, cigarette, or similar).
May leave odor and stains
Can damage the surface areas.

Still on the hunt for a bed bug fix, I thought I’d give some home remedies a shot: alcohol, kerosene, and gasoline. These were next up on my list, and I was curious if these cheap and easy-to-get options would work.

First off, using alcohol, kerosene, and gasoline to kill bed bugs is super cheap and you can easily find them around the house. This makes them pretty handy when you suddenly find yourself with an infestation.

But that’s where the good news ends. The results were all over the place. Sure, they killed the bugs touched right away, but this meant soaking your apartment with these substances. These things are really dangerous. The constant worry about fires or explosions, especially with kids and pets around, was nerve-wracking.

On top of that, these remedies left behind strong smells and stains that were tough to clean up. The room stank like a workshop. Although I am quite resilient, I did start to think about possible skin irritations or even allergies, adding even more headaches to the mix. In the end it just felt too risky and impractical to use so I quickly stopped after some initial tests.

Desiccants
Diatomaceous earth, silica gels.
product
RATING
9.2
"Great defensive strategy"
Price: starting at $29.99

Non-toxic and eco-friendly way to tackle bed bugs, but messy, slow-acting, and tricky to apply.

PROS
Highly effective.
Non-toxic if handled correctly.
Chemical-free.
Environmentally friendly and sustainable option.
With residual effect.
Bed bugs can’t develop resistance to them.
CONS
Incorrect grade desiccants can harm your health.
Not recommended if you have pets or children.
Inadequate in case of severe infestations.
Slow (we’re talking up to several months) to kill bed bug population, since it requires bed bugs to walk into the powdered area.
Messy - a fine powder can easily spread and become airborne.
Difficult for clean-up.
Can cause respiratory issues if inhaled in large quantities.
Leaves residue.
Does not kill eggs.
Effective only while the powder is present and dry.
Ineffective in cracks, crevices, and other hard-to-reach areas.
Requires a careful and skilled application with correct protective gear.

So, I'm still on the hunt for to get rid of bed bugs, and I figured I'd give powdered desiccants a shot. I heard good things about them and was curious to see how they'd do in my place.

First off, these desiccants are pretty effective and non-toxic if you use them right. It felt good to try something chemical-free and eco-friendly. Plus, these powders keep working as long as they stay dry, which is a huge bonus. And the best part? Bed bugs can’t become immune to them, so that's a win.

But, it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows. The biggest downside? The mess. This fine powder gets everywhere and can go airborne, which means it's a pain to clean up and might cause breathing issues if you inhale too much.

Another thing, they work slowly. Desiccants dehydrate bed bugs, but this process can take months because the bugs have to literally walk through the powder. If you’ve got a major infestation, this slow pace just doesn’t cut it. Plus, they don’t kill bed bug eggs and can’t reach into cracks and crevices where these pests love to hide.

It turned out to be more complicated than I expected. Using these desiccants means you have to be extra careful. You need to apply them properly and wear the right gear to avoid health risks, especially with certain grades.

And if you have pets or kids, it’s pretty much a no go, since you cannot let them near the powdered areas as otherwise they’ll sniff and lick this powder.

Highly Effective & Proven to Work

University developed and tested in a 3rd party GLP compliant laboratory according to EPA OCSPP method 810.3900 to determine the product’s efficacy in killing field-strain bed bugs (Cimex lectularius).

What were the results? Say Bye Bugs is an effective bed bug destroyer that works in seconds.

How is this possible? The main ingredient chemically reacts with the insect’s exoskeleton, disrupting the lipid layers of its shell. This disruption leads to instantaneous desiccation (drying), followed by death. This unique delivery method also ensures that Say Bye Bugs kills even pesticide resistant bed bugs.

Family-icons

Pet & Family Safe

Say Bye Bugs is not toxic when used as directed since it uses ingredients that are Generally Recognized as Safe through common use in food or other applications, scientific evidence and expert consensus. It is a mix of the safest ingredients available that still ensure a highly efficient bed bug killer.

Even more than that – the ingredients are also biodegradable, producing minimum burden to the environment. After all, proper pest control is not about toxifying your environment to the point that hurts everything and everyone. It’s about solving one problem yet ensuring minimal or even no impact on everything else.

"You may want to write some of this info down for future reference. ...... This stuff WORKS! .... It stopped the infestation almost within two days. ... Over a period of a couple months we did see a couple. After another spray, nothing for another month then only one. Nothing more since . ... With the other we tried we had to keep spraying every other day.

It also kills fleas and ticks. .... And we hardly ever see a cockroach anymore since I have sprayed the rugs and furniture just to cut down in fleas..."

"HUGE thank you! Apparently I recently had bed bugs. No signs of them other than getting eaten alive between my shoulder blades. No live bugs, no fecal that I could see, no blood marks and even checked under the sheets just before dawn. Still no signs. But I knew I was getting bitten by something and it was happening during the night which was freaking me out to say the least. And oh my word do those bites itch like crazy!

Bought 2 bottles of your product. Stripped the bed and washed linen in hot water. I sprayed the mattress and box spring all over (I know you said a light spray but I was nervous and sprayed EVERYWHERE). I had read that, like lice, it wasn't about being clean or dirty because I'm a little OCD on cleanliness. But I also read that bed bugs like to hide in the cracks of furniture, especially those that are old like curbside or thrift store furniture.

Ding ding ding. That was the light. I have a renewed furniture shop and I am constantly bringing in old pieces. So that's where they came from. Now to rid of them.

So I'm spraying the mattress, box springs, carpet, curtains and surrounding furniture. I do this 2 days in a row. My "bite marks" are healing and I haven't had any more bites since.

So long story short, you have truly been my hero. Thank you for rescuing me without me having to empty my savings account and for your product to work so quickly and give me back my peace to go to sleep without worry of being a bug's buffet.

Thank you. I will continue to buy!!!!!!"
