Find Them Early
How to get rid of bed bugs and their offspring for good requires that you get a head start on them at the first sign of their appearance.
Bed bugs can be identified by their physical presence, their droppings (about this big: ●), and their eggs.
Once Identified, Kill Them Off
In this early stage, killing them off is not nearly as difficult as it would be in a heavy infestation.
Strip your bedding. Stuff it into a pillow case, then stuff that pillow case into a second one. Put the double-bagged bedding into the washing machine. Remove the bedding from the pillow cases. Discard the inner one in a plastic bag that you leave outside. Wash the bedding in hot water, then dry it on high heat in the dryer for at least 30 minutes. Wash and dry any clothing in the area as well, or take the clothing to the dry cleaners if you’re concerned about shrinkage.
Put your pillows into the dryer on high for at least 30 minutes (separate from the newly washed linens).
While your bedding is in the wash, return to the bedroom. Pull the bed away from the walls at least 6 inches. Vacuum the mattress, box spring, and bed frame, paying careful attention to the creases as that’s where bed bugs love to hide. Use a vacuum cleaner that has disposable bags. Vacuum the floor, the baseboards, around the window casements, and in all cracks and crevices. If a credit card can fit into a crack, so can a bed bug. Dispose of the vacuum bag in a plastic bag that you leave outdoors.
Since the bed bug egg cycle is four to five weeks, you must vacuum the room and bed frame daily, disposing of the vacuum cleaner bag after vacuuming.
- Encase the Mattress, Box Spring, and Pillows
Mattress, box spring, and pillow encasements not only keep bed bugs from infesting your bedding, they will kill off any bed bugs and eggs remaining in them. This is a critical component of getting rid of bed bugs and their offspring for good. Make sure the encasements are fully sealed in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Spray the Area with Cold-Pressed Neem Oil
Cold-pressed neem oil is the only biopesticide approved by the EPA that’s capable of killing bed bugs
, their larvae, and their eggs. It’s safe to use around pets and children. Be sure to purchase a product containing at least 5.5% neem oil. Spray it on the bed frame, around the baseboards and windows. It will not only kill remaining bed bugs – it will keep them from reinfesting your bedroom.
Bed bugs may be a nuisance, but you won’t have to put up with them for long. If you follow these instructions to the letter, you will learn how to get rid of bed bugs and their offspring for good.
